Forensic Nurse/SANE Clinical Residency | RE Lab: Strengthening Forensic Nursing

Re LAB offers a Forensic Nurse/SANE residency, or preceptorship, with clinical placements at one or two of the participating FNE/SANE Programs:

The Regions FNE Program serves persons 13 years and older who have experienced sexual assault and/or Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Serves multiple hospitals in the Twin Cities area
Hennepin Assault Response Team (HART) serves persons of any age who have experienced sexual assault and/or Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Serves multiple hospitals in the Twin Cities area
Central Minnesota Child Advocacy Center (CMCAC) provides acute and non-acute care to children and vulnerable adults. St. Cloud, MN. Residents may request a primary placement at CMCAC or may request to supplement their time at another sitewith time at CMCAC

Residency Format:

Participants stay in the Twin Cities area (Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN) for 5-10 calendar days. Participants will be on-call for the duration of their on-site time, with a respite period after a case. On-site days may be separated into 2 blocks, if needed (for example, 2 weekends of 3 days each).

When FNE preceptors receive a page to attend a case, the participant will be notified to meet the preceptor at the case location and work on the case alongside the preceptor.
Participants will work with multiple preceptors and may attend cases in multiple locations.
Due to the nature of sexual assault response work, the number of cases each participant will attend is unknown and may vary.
Participants will complete supplemental coursework before, during, and after the clinical experience including self-assessment, case reflection assignments, trauma-informed care readings, and case and clinical experience debriefing.

Upon completion, residents receive one college credit and a completion certificate for 17 CEUs for this activity. On-call and case hours count towards eligibility for SANE certification.

Eligibility:

Residents must:

Have an active RN or NP license (from any US state or territory)
Be practicing as a FNE/SANE currently
- If you are not currently working as a FNE/SANE but are planning to start a FNE/SANE program, applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and additional requirements may apply.
Have completed the 40-hour didactic training and clinical skills course for SANE nursing
Within the last 12 months: have completed 2 cases -or- FNE/SANE clinical training--if you are currently working as a FNE/SANE, exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Be able to physically stay in the Twin Cities area and travel to clinical sites during the clinical section of the course
Be willing and able to meet the School of Nursing compliance requirements for clinical placement and meet the course clinical partner's compliance requirements.

Cost:

Tuition and travel support are available through HRSA training support funding for Re LAB members. Financial support award can cover the following: tuition and fees, up to 10 nights lodging, and coverage of additional allowable travel costs (see Travel Support Guidelines).
This residency is offered as a 1- or 2- credit course through the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and the tuition and fee cost per credit is approximately $1,500--this is paid directly by Re LAB for Re LAB members.
Any financial support through Re LAB is contingent upon completion. If a student does not successfully complete the course requirements or cancels after completing registration, the project is unable to offer financial support and the student will be responsible for fees/charges associated with the late withdrawal.
